the Tree Species

  • Native to southeastern U.S. and eastern Mexico
  • First described in 1789 outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, by French naturalist and explorer Andre Michaux
  • Endangered in Arkansas and Ohio
  • Not often used for landscape purposes due to large leaves and flowers -- difficult to manage and must be protected from winds
