History of
the Tree Species
Botanist Andre Michaux discovered yellowwood in the winter of 1796.
Yellowwood won a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Award in 1994.
Native Americans used the tree for building and carving.
Early settlers in southern Appalachians used root bark as dye and wood for gunstocks.
Today, primarily used for ornamental purposes thanks to showy clusters of flowers.
White flowers appear in summer and are fragrant (vanilla-like).
