History of
the Tree Species

  • Specialized form of eastern redbud...
  • Discovered in the spring of 2000 by Kerry Swanson and Danny Fountain of Greenleaf Nursery in Park Hill, OK.
  • One of their 3,000 seedling redbuds grew red leaves, was patented "Greswan" and sold under the name of Burgundy Hearts.
  • Trademarked between 2007 and 2019.

  • Grows at medium rate
  • Expected lifespan of >60 years in ideal conditions
  • Grows best in full to partial shade
  • Prefers to grow in average to moist conditions
  • Doesn't do well in dry conditions

  • Flowers are edible, slightly sour, and high in vitamin C
